This custom balustrading was fabricated from mild steel, with the main structural frame formed from 10mm flat bar and the distinctive accent pieces from 6mm flat bar. The design was developed around a simple, repeated form, creating a strong architectural rhythm while keeping the overall profile clean and understated.

The 10mm flat bar was cut and carefully bent to achieve the curved sections of the balustrade, with each piece formed to maintain consistency across the length of the installation. The 6mm flat bar accent pieces were then individually shaped and positioned within the main frame, creating the repeated vertical elements that give the railing its distinctive character.

Once the components were formed, they were tack welded together and checked for alignment before being fully welded. The welds were cleaned back where required, leaving the steel with a raw, industrial character rather than disguising the material beneath a heavy finish.

The completed sections were transported to site and carefully positioned against the existing structure. Each section was aligned and secured in place, with the installation following the contours of the building and ensuring the railing remained consistent from one end to the other.

The client specifically wanted the mild steel left raw and untreated, allowing the material to naturally react with the surrounding environment. Instead of applying a protective coating, the exposed steel was intentionally designed to patina over time, gradually developing its own colour, texture and character.

The result is a balustrade that is designed to change. As the steel is exposed to the elements, its surface will naturally evolve, creating a finish that becomes increasingly unique to its surroundings.
