This custom wall sculpture began with an 18mm shutterply backing board and SA Pine timber fins measuring 152mm × 38mm. Although the overall concept appeared straightforward, every individual fin had to be cut to length by hand, sanded, shaped, and then assembled by nailing it to the backing board.
The first major challenge came during assembly. As the backing board began to bow, the spacing between the fins became inconsistent through the centre of the sculpture. To correct this, the central fins had to be removed and reassembled with custom spacers, ensuring every gap remained perfectly uniform across the entire piece.
Finishing presented another unexpected obstacle. Hand-applying the stain proved impractical due to the tight spacing between the fins, making it difficult to achieve an even finish. The process was adapted by using a spray gun, allowing the stain to reach every surface consistently while enhancing the natural character of the wood.
The completed sculpture measured approximately 6m × 1.5m with a depth of 170mm and was divided into four large panels for transport. While fabrication demanded patience and precision, installation became the greatest challenge. Each panel was considerably heavier than anticipated, requiring the entire team to lift and hold it in place while two installers secured it to the wall. Once the first panel was successfully installed, the team refined their workflow, enabling the remaining panels to be fitted more efficiently without compromising the quality of the finished installation.
